Climate and Energy Policy

Climate change will have a significant effect on public lands and waters, but these places will also play a role in solving climate change. Addressing climate change means ensuring a future with clean air and water, protected land, renewable energy, and economic growth. Outdoor Alliance and its member groups work closely on public lands issues, and we know that public lands and waters will be part of climate solutions. We also monitor active oil and gas leases to protect public lands.

Natural Climate Solutions

The outdoors are under immense pressure from climate change, increasing demand for outdoor recreation, and unequal access to the green space. Protecting more nature—through restoration and reforestation, preserving open land, stopping extractive activity, building more parks, and permanently protecting land and water—protects communities from the effects of climate change while providing more access to the outdoors.

Wildfire Policy

Fire is a natural part of landscapes in the west, and not all fire is bad. As we look into the future, there is no “no-fire, no-smoke” option in the west. Outdoor recreationists have a role to play in both understanding fire and advocating for the best ways to address, prevent, and recover from severe fire.

Oil and Gas Leasing

Our GIS team monitors oil and gas lease sales that could affect outdoor recreation and we object to lease sale parcels that overlap with recreation, designated conservation areas, and other sensitive sites.
