Greenway Stories

Snoqualmie Pass

Tania Lown-Hecht

What is your favorite place to climb, hike, mountain bike, ski, snowshoe, or paddle in the Greenway?: Snoqualmie Pass

What's special about this place?: Snoqualmie Pass is home to soaring mountains with dramatic relief. Not only is the scenery breathtaking, but the adventure opportunities are boundless. As a backcountry skier, I love all of the opportunities to get outside and explore a new place off the beaten path. And it's so accessible - a nature sanctuary right in Seattle's backyard!

Share a favorite memory from this spot.: Three years ago I was laid off from a job I didn't love (ironically on Valentine's Day), and I vowed to take a more active role in my life by doing more things I DO love. Four days later I spent a Tuesday backcountry skiing in the Snoqualmie Valley. A friend and I climbed and skied 6500 vertical feet in sunny, near-pristine conditions. The tour took us around Chair Peak and into a gully of white. The powder stands out as some of the lightest of my life, billowing fluffy clouds of cold-smoke with each turn. We climbed again toward snow lake and skied back out through the valley to our car, where we saw the first other humans of the day. To me, there's something completely magical about spending a day in the wilderness without seeing another soul. It's so spectacular we have opportunities to do so in our own backyard.
